Mobile Backhaul and Traditional Markets Lead to Increased PTP Microwave Shipments, a new Visant Strategies report finds

New York - The need for more mobile backhaul due to bandwidth intensive audio/video services as well as increased usage in other traditional point-to-point microwave markets will benefit the microwave industry through the decade, a new Visant Strategies report finds.

While the future of the point-to-point microwave industry has been pinned on the impending success of the mobile wireless market and the new era of third generation services, the traditional markets served by the microwave industry will also help lead to an estimated $3.4 billion in sales globally in 2011, according to "Point-To-Point Microwave Radio: The Market in 2006 and the Coming Decade."

"We don't only see mobile wireless backhaul helping the point-to-point microwave industry realize a large increase in unit shipments, but also trunking, public safety, and broadcast applications leading to more sales," said study author Dan Sweeney. "Enterprise and private network shipments, most in the unlicensed band, will almost double in 2011 from the amount that are due to be shipped this year."

Wide acceptance of mobile applications, especially video, could lead to nearly two million PTP microwave radios being shipped in 2009, according to the report, as hundreds of millions utilize high-end mobile wireless networks. Deployment of more next generation IP-based mobile networks such as UMTS LTE, 802.16 and possibly 802.20 are anticipated to usher another growth period for PTP radios starting in 2010. However, new technologies such as software defined radio and PTP specific ASICs will contribute to substantial price erosion on microwave radios through the study period.

In the report point-to-point microwave industry segments, shipments, usage and sales by region, frequency, and application through 2011 are given and shipments are also segmented by link capacity in both 2005 and 2011. The worldwide mobile backhaul market is also detailed with shipments and the value of those shipments through 2011 given as well as the number of wireless and 3G subscribers and mobile wireless and WiMAX base stations deployed through 2011. Competition to point-to-point microwave is also studied.
